Kentucky fans, I know this hurts to relive.  But, it was the best basketball game of all time.

It’s crazy for me.  There’s only a handful of events in my life where I know where I was when that event transpired.

On March 28th, 1992, I was with my grandfather watching the Indiana high school state championship at the old Hoosier Dome (RIP) in Indianapolis.  The game didn’t start until 8pm, but we got back to the arena early to watch the game–Kentucky vs. Duke.

I remember, despite constant grumblings, they wouldn’t show the game on the jumbotron inside the stadium.  So we had to go out to the concourse.

There were more fans crammed in the concourse all the way around the dome watching the classic game than there were in the actual dome itself watching the pregame shootaround for the state’s most important annual basketball game.

It was wild, but you all know that.

Please forgive me for posting this

Got this from a colleague via e-mail, and if you’re a Duke hater, you will love it.

If you are a Duke lover, then you are an elitist who shouldn’t even be visiting this site.

Happy March!

Some programs weren’t meant to be # 1

This is from the “I-just-had-a-random-thought-today-and-felt-the-need-to-share-it-even-though-it’s-not-compelling-writing” file.

You may or may not know that college basketball is my first love. It probably always will be (the NFL is close behind).

I look around the landscape of college basketball and there’s only one constant (or so it seems): there are only a handful of teams that can “handle” being the number one team in the country.

Am I crazy? I mean, come on. Wake Forest gets there, can’t stay but a week. Pitt couldn’t hang around but two weeks. The list goes on and on.

Yet, you always see teams like North Carolina, Duke, Kentucky, Kansas, and others that, if they hit number one, you expect them to stay there for multiple weeks.

Now, there are exceptions. Sometimes the Tarheels can falter fast while assuming the top spot, and going the other way, sometimes teams “off the beaten path” can chill out at number one with an umbrella drink (see ’04-’05 Illinois… I think Cards fans remember them).

Anyway, it’s nothing mind-boggling. I’m not making some sort of revelation today or anything like that. It just seems like the Demon Deacons of the world will hit the top spot every so often, and immediately get knocked back to where they belong.

Makes me wanna start betting some more college hoop right now!
